Rory McIlroy recently expressed that having Bryson DeChambeau compete in September’s Irish Open would significantly benefit the tournament. This stance comes despite recent friction, as McIlroy had previously stated he was not particularly fond of the American golfer following a controversy at the Open Championship where DeChambeau faced a penalty for improving his lie.
Despite his personal reservations, McIlroy emphasized that DeChambeau’s participation at Trump International Golf Links in Doonbeg would provide a substantial boost to the event. Following his final round at Royal Birkdale, the Northern Irishman noted that while he had personal differences with DeChambeau, the professional value of his inclusion is undeniable.
McIlroy also addressed his own career outlook, confirming he will take a break until the PGA Tour play-offs in mid-August. He admitted that his motivation for the FedEx Cup has diminished, noting that the current structure of the PGA Tour and the specific requirements for the Tour Championship have changed his approach. He explained that his priorities have shifted and he is no longer as driven by the standard tour schedule as he once was. Reflecting on his performance at The Open, where he finished in neutral form, McIlroy expressed frustration at his inability to maintain momentum throughout the week.
