Robinson Returns and Three Debutants Named for England Test Squad

England has finalized its roster for the upcoming Test match against New Zealand at Lord’s, beginning 4 June.

The squad features the return of Sussex pace bowler Ollie Robinson, who has not played internationally for two years, alongside three uncapped players: Emilio Gay, James Rew, and Sonny Baker.

This selection follows England’s recent struggles in the Ashes. Zak Crawley has been excluded from the lineup for the first time since the leadership transition to captain Ben Stokes and coach Brendon McCullum in 2022.

Durham’s 26-year-old Emilio Gay is the frontrunner to replace Crawley, given his experience as a specialist opener, though wicketkeeper-batter James Rew remains an option.

The spin bowling department includes Shoaib Bashir and Rehan Ahmed, the latter potentially making his home Test debut.

Meanwhile, Marcus North, the Durham director of cricket, has been appointed as the new national selector. He succeeds Luke Wright, becoming the first non-English official to head the national selection panel.

Robinson’s recall arrives as England seeks to restructure its fast-bowling unit following the retirements of James Anderson, Stuart Broad, and Chris Woakes.

Although Robinson boasts a strong career average of 76 wickets at under 23 runs, his recent exclusion was largely driven by recurring fitness concerns, including back injuries that hindered his performance in matches against Australia and India.
