On Monday, chaos erupted at Ignatius Ajuru University of Education in Rumuolumeni, Rivers State, as members of the Vikings and Clansmen cults engaged in a violent battle for dominance. The confrontation took place during the institution’s ongoing Students’ Union Government week, causing students to flee in fear as gunfire echoed throughout the campus.
Students sought refuge under desks and beds to avoid stray bullets, leading to a temporary suspension of academic activities. Blessing Agabe, the police spokesperson, confirmed the incident and stated that officers arrived promptly to restore order. She clarified that no lives were lost and police did not fire any shots, noting that investigations are underway to capture the fleeing suspects.
Human rights advocate Prince Wiro expressed concern over the frequent recurrence of cult activities at the school. He labeled the event as a disgrace to the institution and urged the Rivers State government to improve campus security to prevent further incidents that could damage the university’s reputation and student enrollment.
