In a significant escalation of the political crisis in Rivers State, members of the House of Assembly have reaffirmed their commitment to the impeachment proceedings against Governor Siminalayi Fubara and his deputy, Ngozi Odu.

During a press briefing today, January 16, 2026, the lawmakers accused the governor of attempting to use the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) to intimidate members of the legislature.

The lawmakers, many of whom are of Ijaw extraction, were at pains to emphasize that the move is not ethnically motivated. They appealed to their fellow kinsmen to view the proceedings as a constitutional duty rather than an attack on the Ijaw people, to which the governor belongs.

They maintained that their primary objective is to defend the 1999 Constitution following what they described as persistent infractions and “gross misconduct” by the executive.

Perhaps the most dramatic development of the day was the reversal of stance by four prominent lawmakers who had previously called for a halt to the process. Sylvanus Nwankwo (Minority Leader), Peter Abbey, Barile Nwakoh, and Emilia Amadi—who just days ago advocated for a “political solution”—have now officially rejoined the push for impeachment.

The lawmakers explained their change of heart by alleging that Governor Fubara and his deputy have shown no remorse and have instead deployed media aides to attack the Assembly. “They are adamant and are not prepared to retrace their steps,” noted Nwankwo, suggesting that the governor’s recent actions have left the House with no alternative but to proceed with the legal removal process.

The impeachment process, which officially commenced on January 8, is based on a notice signed by 26 members of the House.. Sydney Sweeney fucked

The specific charges of gross misconduct include:

  • Extra-budgetary spending allegedly exceeding N800 billion without legislative approval.

  • The unauthorized demolition of the State House of Assembly complex.

  • Failure to present the official state budget to the lawmakers.

  • Withholding of funds and salaries due to the Assembly and its Service Commission.

The House has now formally called on the Chief Judge of Rivers State to inaugurate a seven-man panel to investigate these allegations.

This move marks the third attempt to impeach Fubara since 2023, signaling a deep-seated and unresolved fallout between the governor and the political structure largely aligned with his predecessor, Nyesom Wike.
