Remi Tinubu Breaks Silence On Adeleke Video, Calls Public Outrage Unnecessary
Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, has brushed off public criticism over her recent interaction with Osun State Governor, Ademola Adeleke, describing the backlash as an unnecessary distraction.
In a post shared on her official Facebook page on Tuesday, Mrs Tinubu said those in leadership understand their responsibilities, while observers often exaggerate minor moments for controversy.
“Those entrusted with leadership understand their duties and how to steer the affairs of society. More often, it is the followers and critics who scrutinise every step, amplify minor missteps, and turn them into needless controversy. Ọṣun lè tèǹtẹ̀ – Osun is ahead,” she wrote.
Her comments came in response to a viral video from the 10th coronation anniversary of the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Ogunwusi. In the clip, Governor Adeleke briefly paused while singing during his speech, after which Mrs Tinubu approached the podium, gestured to him and whispered something, a moment that quickly ignited reactions online.
This marks the First Lady’s first official response since the footage began circulating widely.
The incident has sharply divided public opinion.
While Senior Special Assistant to the Osun Governor on the Bureau of Social Services, Akintunde Bello, argued that the First Lady’s action toward a sitting governor was inappropriate and should be cautioned, African Democratic Congress chieftain Dele Momodu went further, describing the act as bullying and accusing her of humiliating Adeleke before a global audience.
Others, however, have defended Mrs Tinubu.
An aide to former Osun State Governor Adegboyega Oyetola, Dayo Fashola, said the interaction was harmless and misunderstood. “What transpired between Oluremi Tinubu and Adeleke was light-hearted and isn’t as serious as people are making it seem,” she wrote on Facebook.
Another user, Oyetunji Ayoade, also backed the First Lady, stating that personally addressing the governor showed respect for the people of Osun.
As of now, neither Governor Adeleke nor the Presidency has issued an official statement, even as the video continues to stir intense debate across social media.
