Religion Becomes Focal Point in Osun Gubernatorial Dispute Between APC and Governor Adeleke

APC deputy governorship candidate Benjamin Adereti and Governor Ademola Adeleke have clashed over religious identity ahead of the August 15 Osun governorship election.

During the 70th anniversary of the Union Baptist Church in Osogbo, APC deputy governorship candidate Benjamin Adereti launched a verbal attack on Governor Ademola Adeleke, labeling him a religious hypocrite. Adereti argued that the governor’s personal faith remains ambiguous, contrasting this with the APC ticket, which he described as a balanced Muslim-Christian partnership between gubernatorial candidate Alhaji Bola Oyebamiji and himself. He expressed confidence that voters would favor the APC in the upcoming August 15 election.

Governor Adeleke quickly countered these claims through his spokesperson, Olawale Rasheed. Speaking to the Muslim community in Osogbo, the governor defended his record by highlighting several initiatives his administration has undertaken for the faith group. He pointed to the construction of a Hajj camp and the establishment of a mosque within the Government House as evidence of his commitment. Adeleke asserted that his contributions to the Muslim community significantly exceed those of his predecessors, suggesting that his actions serve as a better indicator of his beliefs than political rhetoric.
