R&A Closing In on Selection of Portmarnock for Open Championship

The R&A is nearing a final decision on hosting an Open Championship at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin, potentially becoming the first tournament venue outside the UK.

Mark Darbon, the chief executive of the R&A, stated that the organization is nearing a decision to hold an Open Championship at Portmarnock Golf Club in Dublin. If selected, the venue would mark the first time the tournament is held outside the United Kingdom.

The R&A, which oversees the event, initially discussed the possibility of using the Irish course in 2023. The Irish government has pledged support of up to 40 million euro to assist with the venture. Darbon noted that extensive feasibility studies are nearly complete and that the organization believes the site is capable of hosting the championship.

Discussions regarding a long-term model for the AIG Women’s Open and the Open are currently underway with government officials. While the process has been more time-consuming than originally anticipated due to the complexity of the logistics, the R&A expects to have a definitive outlook by the conclusion of the year.

Prominent golfers Rory McIlroy and Shane Lowry have expressed enthusiasm for the move, with Lowry suggesting that the infrastructure and the quality of the course make it an ideal fit for a major tournament. Future Open schedules include St Andrews for next year and Royal Lytham & St Annes in 2028.
