Ecuador Celebrates World Cup Advancement with National Holiday Following Upset Win over Germany

Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa announced a national holiday following a 2-1 victory over Germany that sent the team to the 2026 World Cup knockout round.

Following a surprising 2-1 defeat of Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, Ecuadorian President Daniel Noboa has officially designated a national holiday. The victory, which took place at the New York/New Jersey Stadium on June 25, 2026, allowed Ecuador to advance to the knockout phase of the competition.

President Noboa shared the news on X, lauding the team and coaching staff for their resilience in the face of significant public scrutiny. He emphasized that the group overcame adversity to provide a momentous victory for the nation. Heading into the final Group E fixture, Ecuador required a win after a previous loss to Ivory Coast and a draw against Curaçao. Although they trailed early against the Germans, the team staged a second-half resurgence that sent thousands of fans into celebration.

While Germany had already clinched the top spot in Group E before this match, and Ivory Coast secured second place by beating Curaçao, Ecuador successfully advanced as one of the top third-placed finishers. This achievement represents only the second instance in history that Ecuador has reached the knockout stages, echoing their previous performance in the 2006 tournament.
