Professor Charles Obot from the University of Uyo’s Department of Communication and Media Studies has urged Nigeria to perform a thorough reassessment of its leadership recruitment methods before the 2027 general elections. Speaking at an international conference at Topfaith University in Akwa Ibom State, he warned that the nation will remain mired in governance crises unless the current selection framework is completely transformed.
The academic highlighted that integrity, honesty, and transparency are essential traits for those in power. He specifically criticized the ongoing conflicts between political parties and the Independent Electoral Commission, arguing that these power struggles hinder effective governance. Furthermore, Obot expressed concern over the victimization of whistleblowers, noting that national progress is impossible when ethical actions are penalized.
During the same event, Dr. Andy Eyo, CEO of the Excellence Community Education Welfare Scheme, emphasized that future leaders must prioritize social entrepreneurship to combat unemployment and boost the national economy. Meanwhile, Dr. Emmanuel Abraham, Chairman of Topfaith University, noted that the crisis of governance in Nigeria also involves the behavior of the citizenry. He expressed optimism that the conference findings will guide future policymakers.
