President Tinubu requests Senate endorsement for secondary education legislative changes

President Bola Tinubu has submitted the National Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026, to the Senate to improve the administration of senior secondary education in Nigeria.

President Bola Tinubu has formally asked the Senate to review and approve the National Secondary Education Commission (Amendment) Bill, 2026. This legislative move is intended to enhance the governance and operational oversight of public senior secondary schools throughout Nigeria.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio introduced the official communication during Thursday’s session. The President’s message highlighted that the Federal Executive Council gave its formal nod to the bill on April 30, 2026. Following this, the Federal Ministry of Justice reviewed the document to ensure it aligns with constitutional standards.

In response to the request, Akpabio assigned the bill to the Senate Committee on Rules and Business, requesting that they finalize their review and submit a report within one week. This proposal arrives as Education Minister Tunji Alausa pursues broader reforms to lower dropout rates and guarantee 12 years of consistent schooling for all Nigerian children.

Currently, the nation utilizes a 6-3-3-4 education model. While the government aims to optimize this structure, experts remain focused on persistent obstacles such as educational infrastructure deficits, systemic poverty, and insecurity, which remain primary drivers for students leaving school prematurely.
