President Bola Tinubu has formally commended the Nigerian contingent for their noteworthy achievements at the 2026 Commonwealth Games held in Glasgow, Scotland. The team finished the event with a total of 24 medals, prompting the President to promise further backing for the nation’s sports sector.
According to a report released on Tuesday by Bayo Onanuga, the Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, the President highlighted the collection of 10 gold, seven silver, and seven bronze medals as a clear indicator of the competitors’ grit and focus. Tinubu lauded the athletes for carrying the national flag with dignity and thanked the entire support staff, including coaches and medical professionals, for their hard work.
Furthermore, the President acknowledged the contributions of the Nigeria Olympic Committee and the National Sports Commission. He stated that his administration is dedicated to enhancing sporting institutions and upgrading training facilities to help local talent thrive globally. While the total of 24 medals matches the count from the 2018 games, it remains lower than the results seen in 2014 and 2022.
