Police Leadership Denies Recruitment of Former Insurgents

DIG Kenechukwu Onwuemelie has clarified that the Nigeria Police Force does not recruit deradicalized former terrorists, emphasizing that standard vetting procedures remain mandatory.

Deputy Inspector-General of Police Kenechukwu Onwuemelie has rejected claims that the Nigeria Police Force is hiring former insurgents. Speaking in Umuahia, Abia State, the official confirmed that all police recruitment follows strict, transparent vetting and screening protocols that do not allow for the automatic integration of deradicalized individuals.

Onwuemelie is currently leading an operational tour across the South-East as ordered by Inspector-General Olatunji Disu. The goal of this tour is to evaluate regional security, gather feedback from local leaders, and boost police responsiveness. During his meetings, he addressed concerns regarding delays in emergency responses, promising that current operational gaps will be analyzed and corrected.

Regarding tensions surrounding nomadic groups, the DIG clarified that cattle herding should not be equated with criminality. He emphasized that any individual engaging in illegal acts must face justice regardless of their occupation. He also advocated for closer ties between security forces and local communities, noting that residents are the most effective source of intelligence for identifying suspicious behavior before it escalates.

Furthermore, the police command encouraged community leaders to mentor youth and use formal channels to manage disputes. Vigilante groups were reminded to remain within legal boundaries under proper oversight. Abia State police officials reiterated their dedication to community-based policing, while traditional and community leaders urged the force to ensure intelligence is acted upon swiftly to maintain safety.
