Police Chief Olatunji Disu Emphasizes Continued Relevance After Retirement

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has urged police officers to prepare early for retirement, emphasizing that the end of active service should be a productive transition rather than a loss of professional relevance.

Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu recently challenged police personnel to view retirement as a transition to a new chapter of public contribution rather than a decline in personal value. Speaking at the 2026 Gallant Officers Recognition and Welfare Initiative, he stressed that proactive planning through financial management, skills training, and entrepreneurship is essential for a dignified exit from service.

Disu highlighted that the Force is prioritizing comprehensive welfare reforms, including better healthcare and psychological support. He invited private and civil sectors to partner with the government to ensure that retired officers remain active, citing their extensive experience as a national asset. He further encouraged officers to prioritize integrity and professional growth throughout their careers as their most enduring legacy.

During the event, experts like Dr. Victoria Ekhomu identified financial and identity-related hurdles as common retirement obstacles, advising officers to avoid fraudulent schemes and instead leverage their security expertise in the private sector. Retired Deputy Inspector-General Sylvester Alabi echoed these sentiments, pointing to the Nigeria Police Act of 2020 as a supportive framework for officers pursuing careers in consultancy and investigative work.

The initiative, organized by Naija Police & U, also honored various officers for their bravery and service, including those facing health challenges. Attendees were reminded that their worth is anchored in their wisdom and character, encouraging them to remain mentors and leaders in their respective communities.
