Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Disu has announced a security strategy for the upcoming Osun State governorship election, confirming that a minimum of four officers will be stationed at every one of the state’s 3,000-plus polling units. This initiative aims to maintain order and integrity throughout the voting period.
During a briefing with civil society groups, Disu addressed worries regarding political interference. He noted that some politicians have attempted to uncover the identities of senior police commanders assigned to specific districts. To prevent potential manipulation, the IGP confirmed that the deployment list for Commissioners and Assistant Inspectors-General of Police will remain confidential until the morning of the election.
The IGP acknowledged the existing threat of cult-related violence in Osun, which he noted has sometimes been manipulated for political gain. Consequently, leadership adjustments have been made within the state police command to reinforce security. Disu emphasized that the force is committed to a peaceful process, warning both his officers against misconduct and politicians against using thugs to intimidate voters.
Samson Itodo, Executive Director of Yiaga Africa, characterized this election as a vital moment for restoring public faith in the national electoral system. He highlighted 13 local government areas as high-risk, including Osogbo and Ife North, urging security services to maintain strict neutrality. Disu echoed this sentiment, reminding all stakeholders that the stability of the nation outweighs the outcome of any single political contest.
