Police Arrest 65-Year-Old Man For Posing As ‘Obi Of Lagos’
Lagos State Police Command has arrested a 65-year-old man, Chibuike Azubike, for allegedly parading himself as the “Obi of Lagos.”
Azubike, said to be from Obodoukwu Ancient Kingdom in Ideato North, Imo State, was picked up alongside three accomplices Chief Chibuzor Ani (57), Chief Martins Nwaodika (65), and Ikechukwu Franklin Nnadi (41).
The suspects were apprehended while attempting to stage an unauthorized “unveiling ceremony” in Amuwo Odofin, where they planned to present a prototype of a purported N1.5bn “Palace of Obi of Lagos State” on September 13.
Police sealed off the venue, Apple Hall, to prevent a public disturbance, especially as the planned coronation had already sparked heated ethnic banter on social media.
Commissioner of Police, Olohundare Jimoh, confirmed that tactical teams, including the Eko Strike Force, were deployed to maintain order. He said the suspects remain in custody at the command headquarters in Ikeja and will be charged once investigations are complete.
Jimoh warned Lagos residents to be wary of impostors exploiting cultural institutions for personal gain, stressing that such actions are illegal and capable of disturbing the peace.
This is not the first such case in the state. In April 2023, police arrested Frederick Nwajagu, the “Eze Ndigbo” of Ajao Estate, for allegedly parading himself unlawfully as a titled chief in Lagos.
