Police Arrest 20 Suspected Cultists Over Ogun Officer’s Killing
The Zone 2 Police Command in Lagos has taken 20 suspected cultists into custody following the brutal killing of a police officer and a string of violent attacks in Ilesi, near Ijebu-Ode, Ogun State.
Spokesperson Umma Ayuba confirmed the arrests on Wednesday, explaining that the violence erupted on November 29, when members of the Neo Black Movement (Aye Confraternity) stormed the community in a retaliatory attack.
The armed group reportedly moved house to house searching for rival cultists, a rampage that drew the attention of a police officer who lived nearby.
Once they spotted him, the gang opened fire killing him instantly and injuring two residents. In a horrifying act, the attackers amputated the officer’s left hand and fled with it.
Police operatives swung into action. In the early hours of December 1, the Zonal Dragon Squad raided a hideout in Ogbere, arresting 20 suspects linked to the attack and other offences, including unlawful firearms possession.
Recovered items include:
- A Nissan Micra (KSH 793 XA)
- A double-barrel short gun
- A single-barrel short gun
- Two locally made pistols
- 29 live cartridges
- 19 mobile phones
- ₦72,000 cash
- Jewelry and ATM cards
One key suspect remains on the run and is believed to be in possession of the officer’s severed hand.
Ayuba added that security has now been tightened in the affected communities. The Assistant Inspector-General for Zone 2, Adegoke Fayoade, urged residents to stay alert and report suspicious movements, vowing that every culprit will face full justice.a
