The Plateau State House of Assembly has signaled its intent to fast-track legal support for the creation of state police. Speaker Naanlong Daniel confirmed this during a meeting in Jos with the Plateau State Advisory Committee on State Police, which is headed by retired DIG Habila Joshak.
Speaker Daniel emphasized that local lawmakers have long favored state-level policing as a primary solution to the recurring security problems in Plateau and across Nigeria. He also praised President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for prioritizing security reforms. The Assembly has pledged full cooperation to ensure the legislative framework for this initiative succeeds.
DIG Joshak noted that Plateau’s specific security environment makes local police units vital for better intelligence and public trust. He highlighted the Assembly’s essential role in crafting the necessary laws. Committee member Prof. Chris Kwajah further urged the legislators to move quickly, arguing that state police will fill critical gaps in current security responses while encouraging community involvement.
The committee, established by Governor Caleb Mutfwang in March, intends for the state police system to operate with neutrality and accountability, serving all citizens fairly regardless of their background.
