Plateau Governor Mutfwang Calls for Combat-Ready Military Approach to State Insecurity

Plateau State Governor Caleb Mutfwang has called on the Nigerian Army to treat regional security threats as combat operations to protect national sovereignty rather than standard peacekeeping missions.

Governor Caleb Mutfwang of Plateau State has challenged the Nigerian Army to shift its strategy regarding regional security. Speaking at a ceremony in Jos, Mutfwang argued that military personnel should treat ongoing threats as active combat operations against enemies of national sovereignty rather than viewing them as routine peacekeeping duties.

The governor shared these remarks during the transition between the outgoing GOC of 3 Division, Major General Folusho Oyinlola, and his successor, Major General Williams Maxwell Dangana. Mutfwang emphasized that the persistent instability in Nigeria represents an existential crisis that demands a more forceful response to protect the nation’s integrity.

During the event, Mutfwang lauded Major General Oyinlola for his 18 months of service, noting that his leadership helped maintain stability and encouraged economic growth in the state despite significant violence. The governor promised his administration’s continued backing for the incoming Commander of Operation Safe Haven.

Major General Oyinlola acknowledged the intense nature of his assignment, revealing that approximately 95 percent of his attention was directed toward Plateau State due to its unique security needs, even though his command spanned five states. He expressed gratitude for the governor’s consistent logistical and moral support and urged local leaders to provide the same level of cooperation to Major General Dangana.
