Peter Obi, the 2027 presidential contender for the Nigeria Democratic Congress, has voiced alarm regarding the consistent degradation of democratic principles and public institutions within Nigeria. He addressed this issue on Tuesday during the 2026 Goodluck Jonathan Foundation Democracy Dialogue in Bauchi State, an event centered on the trajectory of African democracy.
Highlighting his personal experience, the former governor reflected on his 2003 legal challenge regarding the Anambra State governorship. After spending three years in court, he secured his position through judicial intervention. Obi noted that the level of judicial impartiality he experienced back then appears unattainable in the current political climate, noting that he received favorable rulings from judges he had never previously encountered.
Obi criticized various societal pillars, including legal professionals, academics, clergy, and legislators, for participating in activities that erode the integrity of electoral and governance processes. He urged citizens to hold these institutions accountable to protect the nation’s future. The event, titled ‘Beyond Elections: Can Political Parties and the Judiciary Save African Democracy?’, included prominent figures such as Olusegun Obasanjo, Goodluck Jonathan, Namadi Sambo, and Governor Bala Mohammed.
