Patrice Motsepe, the 64-year-old billionaire and leader of the Confederation of African Football (CAF), has officially rejected claims that he intends to enter the political arena. He stated in Johannesburg that South Africa has plenty of competent leaders and does not require his involvement in government.
For some time, local media outlets suggested Motsepe might attempt to succeed his brother-in-law, President Cyril Ramaphosa, after his term concludes in 2029. Despite speculation fueled by supporters wearing ‘PM27’ apparel at an ANC gathering, Motsepe maintains he has no affiliation with political groups. He also explicitly denied any interest in replacing Gianni Infantino as the head of FIFA, noting his primary commitment is to his current CAF leadership role.
The political climate in South Africa remains complicated as the African National Congress manages a fragile coalition following poor election results. President Ramaphosa continues to face scrutiny regarding a 2022 scandal involving a theft at his private farm, a case that recently saw renewed legal attention. Motsepe, whose wealth is estimated at $3.5 billion by Forbes, remains focused on his business ventures, including African Rainbow Minerals and the Mamelodi Sundowns football club.
