A federal judge in the United States has sentenced Ismael “El Mayo” Zambada, a prominent leader of the Sinaloa Cartel, to spend the remainder of his life behind bars. The 76-year-old was also ordered to pay $15 billion in restitution. This ruling follows a plea deal struck last year in which Zambada admitted to charges including conspiracy and drug trafficking, successfully avoiding the death penalty.
Zambada’s incarceration resulted from a 2024 sting operation where he was deceived by the son of fellow co-founder Joaquin “El Chapo” Guzmán into flying to Texas under the pretense of inspecting airstrips. Following his apprehension, internal power struggles have caused significant unrest within the Sinaloa region. Prosecutors highlighted that Zambada’s decades-long leadership was marked by violence and the distribution of illicit substances, including fentanyl and cocaine.
While Zambada has requested placement in a prison hospital due to his declining health, federal officials are pushing for a high-security facility, citing concerns that he could still influence criminal operations. Despite his permanent removal from the landscape of organized crime, experts suggest the flow of narcotics into the US is unlikely to cease, as new leadership continues to emerge to fill such power vacuums.
