Pair detained following unauthorized climb of Empire State Building for proposal stunt

A couple was arrested after scaling the Empire State Building’s antenna to unfurl a peace banner and seemingly stage a romantic proposal.

On Wednesday, two people were taken into police custody after climbing the antenna of the Empire State Building. Dressed in black attire and face masks, the individuals ascended to a narrow section of the spire, which stands 1,454 feet above Manhattan. Once at the peak, they displayed a banner with a message about peace and love.

Helicopter news footage showed the pair embracing, kissing, and taking photos while high above the city. At one point, one individual knelt on a platform while an electronic device was set up, appearing to suggest a romantic proposal involving a ring. The couple descended the antenna’s metal structure shortly before 1 p.m., at which point they were apprehended by law enforcement.

No injuries were reported during the event. While the site remains a popular target for unauthorized climbers, officials have not yet disclosed how the duo reached the restricted antenna area, which sits well above the skyscraper’s public observation decks. Empire State Building management has not yet commented on the breach.
