Oxford United part ways with head coach Matt Bloomfield

Oxford United has parted ways with head coach Matt Bloomfield following the club’s relegation to League One.

Oxford United has officially confirmed the departure of Matt Bloomfield from his role as head coach. The 42-year-old took over the position in January, succeeding Gary Rowett, but was unable to prevent the team’s relegation to League One despite a late-season push for safety.

The club praised Bloomfield for his professionalism and integrity throughout his tenure, expressing gratitude for his contributions and wishing him well in his future endeavors. Management stated that the search for a new head coach will commence immediately.

Bloomfield arrived at the club in January when Oxford sat in 23rd place, having previously managed Luton, Wycombe Wanderers, and Colchester United. Although he oversaw a brief resurgence in February and March that briefly pulled the team toward safety, a subsequent dip in form ultimately sealed their return to the third tier.

Reflecting on the campaign in April, Bloomfield had expressed a desire to remain at the club, citing progress in team performance even while acknowledging the disappointment of failing to secure Championship status.
