Osun Stakeholders Reiterate Commitment to a Peaceful Gubernatorial Election

Government officials, election authorities, and civil society leaders gathered in Osogbo to advocate for a peaceful and credible governorship election in Osun State this August.

Key figures from the Osun State government, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), and the Kimpact Development Initiative (KDI) have reinforced their call for a secure and transparent governorship election scheduled for August 15. This appeal was issued during the Osun 2026 Election Peace and Security Summit held in Osogbo.

Governor Ademola Adeleke, represented by Commissioner Biyi Odunlade, emphasized the administration’s dedication to the rule of law and urged all political factions to prioritize decorum over conflict. He reaffirmed that the state is prepared to support security forces to maintain order.

Representing INEC, Professor Kunle Ajayi pledged that the electoral body is focused on delivering a free and fair outcome. Resident Electoral Commissioner Oluwatoyin Babalola added that the commission has already finalized ten of thirteen electoral tasks, including the deployment of 3,753 Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) units. She issued a stern warning against electoral malpractice, noting that agencies like the ICPC and EFCC will be monitoring for vote-buying.

Bukola Idowu of KDI highlighted a troubling history of election-related violence, citing 56 past incidents including 14 fatalities. He urged the youth to reject manipulation, arguing that democratic integrity is impossible in an environment of fear. Traditional leaders, including the Orangun of Oke-Ila, Oba Adedokun Abolarin, echoed these sentiments, advocating for politics defined by service rather than hostility.

Security leadership was equally firm, with Deputy Inspector-General of Police Umar Nadada warning that authorities will strictly punish anyone attempting to disrupt the electoral process. Various religious and political groups concluded the summit by promising their full cooperation to ensure the upcoming vote is conducted peacefully and accurately represents the public will.
