The Osun State chapter of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has officially spoken out against the surge in political violence occurring prior to the August 15 governorship election. Following their July Congress in Osogbo, the union issued a statement, signed by Secretary Olalekan Akindoju alongside Abisola Ariwodola and Francis Ezediuno, demanding impartial conduct from security forces.
The union specifically challenged the Nigeria Police Force to act professionally and maintain neutrality to foster public trust. Journalists emphasized that the upcoming election should not be viewed as a desperate battle, urging politicians to control their supporters and strictly follow electoral guidelines.
Furthermore, the NUJ encouraged all residents to collect their Permanent Voter Cards from INEC centers and participate in the democratic process without fear. The union also requested that security agencies provide protection for reporters to ensure they can work safely throughout the election cycle.
In other developments, the Congress praised Governor Ademola Adeleke for granting permanent status to 66 freelance employees at the Osun State Broadcasting Corporation. This initiative was also attributed to the efforts of Senator Lere Oyewumi. Finally, the union expressed relief regarding the rescue of kidnapped individuals in Oyo State and advised the Osun government to improve security protocols near schools and state borders.
