Omoyele Sowore, the presidential candidate for the African Action Congress, recently stated that he is facing retaliation for defending his own rights and those of all Nigerians. He shared these sentiments during a Friday interview on the Channels Television program, The Morning Brief.
The activist recently secured his release from the Kuje correctional facility following a N200 million bail arrangement. The government initiated a defamation lawsuit against him, accusing him of labeling President Bola Tinubu a criminal. Sowore maintains that his legal troubles are not about defamation but rather a targeted effort by those in power to silence him for challenging systemic corruption and impunity. He claims the ruling class views him as an obstacle to their interests.
Sowore emphasized that his history of conflict with authorities dates back years, citing the seizure of his NYSC certificate due to his political involvement in 1996 and his past expulsion from the University of Lagos for participating in protests. He urged the public to disregard the official reasons given for his arrests, insisting that he is being penalized for his ongoing advocacy and defiance against the ruling establishment.
