Brigadier General Olakunle Oluseye Nafiu, the Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), recently visited the Kogi State Secretariat. During his address, he challenged corps members to look beyond their monthly stipends and actively pursue entrepreneurial ventures to secure their financial futures.
Highlighting the value of hard work, General Nafiu encouraged the youth to spot market gaps and create innovative solutions. He specifically referenced small-scale businesses, such as selling snacks, to illustrate how modest beginnings can lead to significant success in Nigeria’s large economy. He reminded them that wealth creation requires focus, innovation, and careful financial management.
Addressing systemic concerns, the DG promised to discuss state-level allowances with the Kogi State Government. He also instructed the state coordinator to stop posting corps members to private firms that fail to provide stipends or housing, emphasizing that primary assignments should serve as opportunities for mentorship rather than exploitation.
Looking ahead, the NYSC management plans to improve welfare, including better camp feeding, increased transportation support, and higher-quality uniforms starting next year. The State Coordinator, Mrs. Chris-Moneke Chika, praised the DG’s leadership and confirmed that the 3,953 corps members across Kogi are well-supported. Preparations are also underway for upcoming initiatives, including the Health Initiative for Rural Dwellers.
