New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has walked back his earlier declaration that he would facilitate the arrest of Benjamin Netanyahu if the Israeli Prime Minister visited the city. Mamdani recently clarified that his office lacks the necessary legal standing to perform such an action.
In a recent video statement, the mayor shifted his stance, urging federal authorities to act on the International Criminal Court (ICC) warrant regarding Netanyahu’s alleged war crimes. Although ICC members are bound by treaty to detain individuals with active warrants, the United States is not a signatory to the Rome Statute.
President Donald Trump criticized the mayor’s initial threats, asserting that Netanyahu would face no such legal trouble while on American soil. Trump defended the Prime Minister’s military actions in the Middle East during a message posted to his Truth Social account.
Mamdani, who has frequently labeled the conflict in Gaza a genocide during his mayoral campaign, noted that while his team researched various legal pathways, they concluded that municipal enforcement of the ICC warrant was not feasible. He reiterated that Netanyahu is not welcome in New York City, where the Prime Minister is expected to attend the United Nations General Assembly this September.
The discourse follows shifting sentiment among Democratic voters regarding US foreign policy in the Middle East. Meanwhile, Israeli UN Ambassador Danny Danon rebuked the mayor, stating that his primary duty is to represent his constituents rather than amplify rhetoric associated with Hamas.
