The Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) has denounced the ongoing kidnapping and murder of students as a national embarrassment and an offense against humanity. This statement follows a violent assault at Government Day Secondary School in Lassa, Borno State, where militants killed a teacher and seized numerous students and staff members.
Abbas Jimoh, speaking for the council under the leadership of Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar III, emphasized that terrorism remains a critical threat to Nigeria. The council noted that these frequent attacks, including recent incidents in Mussa Primary and Junior Secondary School, reveal a persistent vulnerability in school security. The militants allegedly used a local market day to infiltrate the community, highlighting significant gaps in current defense strategies.
The NSCIA advocated for a stronger, tech-forward security approach, citing Enugu State’s implementation of AI-driven surveillance, drones, and advanced command centers as a model. While the group lauded Operation HADIN KAI for their rescue efforts, they insisted that military actions must persist until every victim is returned home. They also honored the bravery of the fallen soldier and Civilian Joint Task Force member who perished during the operation.
Furthermore, the council explicitly distanced Islam from extremist groups like Boko Haram and ISWAP. They stated that these organizations violate core religious tenets regarding the sanctity of life and the pursuit of education. The NSCIA urged the government to pursue these criminals relentlessly to ensure national safety and offered condolences to the victims and their families in Borno State.
