The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC), Anambra State Command, has arrested five suspected illegal private security operatives and recovered a pump-action rifle during a coordinated series of raids in Awka, the state capital.

The State Commandant, Maku Olatunde, disclosed this on Wednesday, October 29, 2025, while parading the suspects at the Command Headquarters. He said the operation, carried out by the Private Guard Companies Department, was part of an intensified effort to dismantle unauthorized security networks and curb emerging threats ahead of the November 8 governorship election.

The raids, conducted across several hotels and grocery stores in Awka around 11 a.m. on Tuesday, October 28, followed credible intelligence suggesting that individuals dressed in uniforms resembling those of recognized security outfits were allegedly hired by political actors to foment unrest.

“In a bid to rid Anambra State of individuals masquerading as private security operatives, the NSCDC has apprehended five suspected illegal private security operatives and recovered a pump-action rifle during raids conducted in Awka,” Olatunde stated.

He listed the suspects as Mmeka Ekene (43), Peter Detuchi Kelvin (28), Sunday Akpan Idiong (45), Enemuo Ifeanyichukwu (26), and Francis Ugochukwu Nwosu (28).

Olatunde explained that the operation was designed to flush out criminal gangs, irredentists, and politically motivated enforcers, while also preventing illegal possession of firearms and any acts that could undermine peace during the election period.

“We are resolute in our commitment to ensuring a secure environment for the forthcoming governorship election. The NSCDC, in collaboration with other security agencies, will take all necessary measures within its operational mandate to suppress any act capable of destabilising the peace in Anambra State,” he said.

The Commandant further revealed that surveillance operations had been enhanced statewide, with particular focus on monitoring “disruptive elements or desperate politicians” attempting to manipulate the electoral process.

“The arrested suspects are currently undergoing interrogation and will be charged in court upon conclusion of investigations,” Olatunde confirmed.

The NSCDC emphasized that it will not relent in its mandate to safeguard lives, property, and the democratic process, warning that any individual or group posing as unauthorized security personnel will face the full weight of the law.
