The long-standing leadership dispute within the National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) appears headed toward a resolution thanks to successful mediation by the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC). During a private meeting at the Labour House in Abuja, NLC President Joe Ajaero guided representatives from opposing factions toward a cease-fire.
Participants from both sides reportedly prioritized the union’s stability over personal grievances, agreeing to set aside hostilities. Insiders suggest that both groups have committed to unconditional future meetings to finalize reconciliation efforts. This breakthrough is viewed as a critical step in healing the internal fractures that have plagued the organization since 2022.
The leadership clash originated following the election of Tajudeen Baruwa as National President, a move contested by a faction led by Musiliu Akinsanya, widely known as MC Oluomo. This disagreement led to the establishment of parallel leadership structures and ongoing legal battles that hampered the union’s efficiency. As the NLC continues to supervise these negotiations, there is growing confidence that a permanent peace agreement is within reach for the vital transport workers’ organization.
