NiMet Issues Urgent Flash Flood Warning for 27 States and the FCT

NiMet has placed 26 states and the FCT on high alert for flash floods from July 11 to July 20 due to intense rainfall and soil saturation.

The Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has released a new emergency alert regarding imminent flash flooding across 26 states and the Federal Capital Territory. This assessment, detailed in the Probable Flash Flood Risk Map covering July 11 to July 20, 2026, was officially published on Sunday.

High-risk regions in the north include Bauchi, Jigawa, Taraba, Adamawa, Plateau, Benue, Nasarawa, and Kogi. Additionally, southern and central states—specifically Kwara, Oyo, Ogun, Lagos, Osun, Ekiti, Ondo, Delta, Edo, Abia, Imo, Ebonyi, Enugu, Akwa Ibom, Cross River, Rivers, and Bayelsa—are also on alert.

NiMet attributed the heightened danger to ongoing heavy precipitation. Because the earth in many areas is already saturated from previous rain, it can no longer effectively drain incoming water. The agency warned that urban centers, low-lying zones, and regions with inadequate drainage are particularly vulnerable to sudden flooding events during this period.
