In an ongoing drive to dismantle militant factions and bolster security throughout the Niger Delta, the Nigerian Navy conducted a raid on a site in Fununu, Brass Local Government Area, Bayelsa State. The mission targeted associates of a prominent wanted criminal.
Navy Captain Abiodun Folorunsho, the Director of Naval Information, stated that the operation took place on August 6, 2026, by troops from the Forward Operating Base Formoso. While the primary target, Sunday Godlaw, managed to escape alongside several cohorts, three of his associates were taken into custody. Authorities accuse Godlaw of involvement in piracy, sea robbery, and illicit sand mining.
Military personnel recovered a variety of equipment at the site, including a pump-action rifle, live ammunition, AK-47 magazines, communication devices, and various uniform pieces. No injuries occurred during the engagement. The three detainees and the seized evidence were transferred to the Bayelsa State Command of the Department of State Services on August 7, 2026, to undergo further investigation.
This mission reflects the Navy’s dedication to preventing criminals from utilizing riverine regions for illegal activities. The service intends to continue its collaboration with other security branches to safeguard coastal infrastructure and maritime zones in the Niger Delta.
