Soldiers from the Joint Task Force, North East, Operation HADIN KAI, defended the Forward Operating Base in Mairari, Guzamala, Borno State, against an ISWAP assault. According to a Nigerian Army report, the engagement began at 11:25 p.m. on July 1, 2026.
The military forces pushed back the insurgents, causing significant losses and seizing weapons such as AK-47 rifles, magazines, and rocket launchers. The attack was aimed at the Mairari community, a site where 950 families have recently resettled. Authorities confirmed that no civilians were harmed, and the resettlement remains unaffected.
Three personnel, including two soldiers and one member of the Civilian Joint Task Force, lost their lives during the defense. Additionally, some military gear sustained damage from enemy fire. Reinforcements from Monguno neutralized two explosive devices planted along the retreat path and continued to engage the fleeing militants.
The Theatre Command expressed its sympathies to the grieving families. Military leadership praised the Mairari operation as proof of their unit’s preparedness to protect the region and maintain order in the North East.
