The Nigerian Army has been named Africa’s top national force for counter-terrorism operations in 2025 by African Security Watch. This accolade honors the institution for its persistent battle against violent extremism and terrorism throughout the region.
Lieutenant General Waidi Shaibu, the Chief of Army Staff, accepted the award on Wednesday at the military headquarters in Abuja. Colonel Appolonia Anele, the Acting Director of Army Public Relations, confirmed that the prize highlights the force’s strategic leadership and operational successes.
Major General Teriworie Gagariga presented the honor, having initially collected it during a ceremony in Banjul, The Gambia. African Security Watch noted that the Army’s ability to conduct joint operations, utilize intelligence-driven strategies, and foster civil-military cooperation were key factors in their selection. These efforts have successfully dismantled terrorist networks and improved regional security.
In his acceptance speech, General Shaibu credited the achievement to the bravery and professionalism of troops stationed across Nigeria. He emphasized that the recognition proves the efficacy of the Army’s modern security strategies. The Chief of Army Staff dedicated the award to soldiers who sacrificed their lives in service and their supportive families.
Looking forward, Shaibu reaffirmed the military’s commitment to enhancing training, intelligence operations, and personnel welfare. He stated that the Army is focused on evolving into a more resilient and combat-ready force prepared to manage both national and regional security threats effectively.
