Nigeria Launches Plan to Connect Digital IDs with Healthcare to Reach 2030 Coverage Goals

Nigeria plans to integrate digital identity systems into its health sector to improve patient record-keeping, expand insurance coverage, and achieve Universal Health Coverage by 2030.

The Nigerian government is embedding verified digital identification systems into its healthcare framework to accelerate progress toward Universal Health Coverage (UHC) by 2030. By syncing digital IDs with medical records and insurance enrollment, officials aim to refine patient care and service delivery nationwide.

Coordinating Minister of Health and Social Welfare, Professor Muhammad Ali Pate, met with the Director-General of the National Identity Management Commission (NIMC), Abisoye Coker-Odusote, to coordinate this effort. The meeting focused on leveraging the NIMC Act of 2025 to build a secure digital infrastructure. Pate highlighted that this shift aligns with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Renewed Hope Agenda, providing a legal basis for secure data management.

This integration aims to close gaps in patient tracking, facilitate seamless electronic medical records, and enhance disease surveillance. With Primary Healthcare Centres managing roughly 45 million patient visits quarterly, officials expect the digital system to streamline operations and improve beneficiary verification for the National Health Insurance program.

A joint technical committee will be formed between health authorities and the NIMC to monitor progress and maintain performance metrics. Minister Pate emphasized that the initiative must prioritize inclusivity, specifically ensuring that vulnerable groups and those with disabilities maintain access to essential services. Coker-Odusote confirmed that the NIMC is dedicated to providing the necessary authentication infrastructure to support these reforms, marking a significant step toward a transparent, technology-backed health sector.
