Professional football players are using social media to push for the permanent adoption of natural grass surfaces throughout the NFL. This movement follows the temporary installation of grass at seven American stadiums to satisfy FIFA requirements for the ongoing World Cup. Despite the vast majority of players—approximately 92%—expressing a preference for natural turf, many of these venues are scheduled to return to artificial surfaces once the tournament concludes.
Research suggests that synthetic turf places greater physical strain on athletes compared to organic grass. Currently, the NFL is split evenly between the two surfaces, with maintenance expenses often cited as the primary obstacle to switching to grass full-time. Players are challenging this narrative with the hashtag #WorthTheCost.
Notable athletes have voiced their support for the change. Caleb Williams of the Chicago Bears questioned the discrepancy, while Jonathan Taylor of the Indianapolis Colts emphasized that player safety should be a priority over cost. Zaire Franklin of the Green Bay Packers argued that the human toll on players’ bodies is too high a price to pay for inaction. The NFL Players Association maintains that the league possesses the necessary expertise and financial resources to implement high-quality grass, urging the organization to provide the same standards for its own stars as it does for international events.
