NDLEA Arrests 127 Drug Offenders, Seizes Over 1,205 kg of Narcotics in Bauchi
The Bauchi State Command of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has arrested 127 suspected drug offenders and confiscated over 1,205 kilograms of illicit substances from January to date.
This was revealed in a statement by State Commander Ali Aminu to mark the 2025 International Day Against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking, commemorated annually on June 26.
A breakdown of the arrests shows 118 male and nine female suspects. The command also secured 28 convictions, with 18 cases still pending in court. Additionally, 32 drug users have undergone counselling and rehabilitation—most through brief intervention programs.
In terms of seizures, the agency recovered 874.585 kg of cannabis sativa, 330.588 kg of psychotropic substances, and 1.06 grams of methamphetamine, commonly known as “ice.”
Aminu highlighted the global impact of drug trafficking, calling it a driver of public health crises, organised crime, and community destruction. He said the 2025 theme, “The evidence is clear. Invest in prevention, break the cycle,” aligns perfectly with Nigeria’s current challenges.
“Criminal networks continue to prey on vulnerable groups, especially women and youths,” Aminu said. “Substances are becoming more dangerous, and traffickers more ruthless.”
He noted that prevention remains the most powerful tool in the fight against drug abuse—a strategy championed by the NDLEA’s War Against Drug Abuse (WADA) initiative. Through education, sensitisation, and community engagement, WADA aims to curtail both usage and trafficking.
However, Aminu stressed that the agency cannot fight the war alone.
“It requires collective action—from individuals, state governments, NGOs, schools, faith-based organisations, and security agencies. Everyone must play a role in spreading awareness and standing against illicit drug use and trafficking,” he said.
The commander also praised NDLEA Chairman Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (retd.) for reinvigorating the agency and inspiring its personnel to intensify their commitment to the mission.
He concluded with a stern warning: “The fight is on. Anyone involved in drug abuse or trafficking should steer clear of Bauchi or be prepared to face the full force of the law.”
