NBC and INEC Coordinate Strategy to Curb Unprofessional Broadcasting in 2027

The NBC and INEC are establishing a joint monitoring framework utilizing AI and inter-agency cooperation to ensure ethical broadcast standards for the 2027 general elections.

Ahead of the 2027 general elections, the National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) and the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are launching a collaborative effort to monitor broadcast standards. NBC Director-General Charles Ebuebu announced that this partnership aims to enforce ethical coverage by moving away from isolated operations. By integrating advanced technology, the two agencies seek to synchronize their oversight functions to address electoral violations more effectively.

To enhance these efforts, the NBC is forming alliances with the Nigerian Communications Commission and the National Information Technology Development Agency. These partnerships will help manage the surge in digital media influence. According to Ebuebu, the commission is also upgrading its infrastructure by incorporating artificial intelligence to oversee thousands of online platforms, moving beyond traditional manual monitoring.

The NBC currently tracks nearly 50 channels from its central station in Abuja and plans to expand this capacity nationwide. Furthermore, an upcoming sensitization workshop in Ibadan will gather media professionals, security agencies, and election officials to review the broadcast code. Ebuebu emphasized that these reminders are necessary to ensure that broadcasters remain impartial while covering increasingly intense political discussions.
