The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has formally opposed the Federal Ministry of Education’s decision to allow higher registration costs for the West African Examinations Council (WAEC) and the National Examinations Council (NECO). NANS President Akinteye Babatunde Afeez released a statement labeling the hike as indifferent to the financial hardships currently impacting Nigerian citizens.
According to the association, the new policy pushes the price per examination to N50,000. This means families could face a total bill of N100,000 for both tests, not counting extra school-level expenses. NANS asserted that this additional financial load is unsustainable during a period of difficult economic reform.
The student organization also criticized the government for failing to include them in the decision-making process. They argued that such significant policy changes should not be determined unilaterally without consulting student representatives. NANS has demanded an immediate cancellation of the fee hike and requested that the ministry prioritize open dialogue with student leaders regarding future educational policies.
