Musiliu Obanikoro, the ex-Minister of State for Defence, stated that the All Progressives Congress presidential candidate, Bola Tinubu, lost in Lagos during the 2023 polls primarily due to the backlash against the party’s Muslim-Muslim ticket. In a conversation on the Mic On podcast with Seun Okinbaloye, Obanikoro dismissed the notion that Peter Obi was the main factor behind the result.
He explained that many voters harbored fears regarding the religious implications of an all-Muslim leadership, worrying that the Christian population might face marginalization. However, Obanikoro emphasized that these concerns were misplaced. He pointed out that Tinubu is not a religious extremist and noted that his family life, including his wife who is a pastor, reflects his inclusive values. He further asserted that Tinubu has demonstrated his commitment to religious diversity through the composition of his cabinet and the faith of his son, Seyi.
