Multiple building failures occur in Abia, avoiding fatalities

Several buildings collapsed across Abia State on Friday due to structural defects and illegal construction, but authorities confirmed that no lives were lost.

A pair of separate building incidents in Umuahia and Ikwuano have left residents shaken, though no injuries were reported. On Finbars Road, a one-storey structure fell during heavy Friday morning rainfall. This site had previously been flagged by the Umuahia Capital Development Authority (UCDA) as an illegal project at risk of failing. General Manager Kingsley Agomoh confirmed that the owner received warnings about structural integrity two months prior.

Separately, an abandoned three-storey property at the Low Cost Housing Estate also gave way on Friday, marking the second such collapse at that location since July 2025. A third structure, a two-storey building under development in Umugbalu, Ikwuano, also succumbed to structural weaknesses, reportedly linked to poor construction materials.

Following site inspections, Agomoh urged developers to strictly follow legal protocols. He emphasized the necessity of obtaining official development permits and conducting comprehensive soil and structural testing to prevent future hazards.
