Military Drills Training Elite Football Managers

Elite football coaches, including Aaron Ramsey and Willy Caballero, are undertaking intensive military training as part of their Uefa Pro Licence to build leadership skills under high-pressure conditions.

In the quiet Herefordshire countryside, the peace is often interrupted by simulated combat scenarios designed to push elite football coaches to their limits. Participants in the Football Association of Wales (FAW) Uefa Pro Licence program—a course famously attended by managers like Mikel Arteta—are placed in high-pressure military exercises. During these sessions, coaches like Aaron Ramsey and Willy Caballero perform first-aid on simulated casualties, while others such as Michael Bradley and Florent Malouda navigate tactical ambushes in the forest.

The training, facilitated by the firm Fieri, forces these football leaders out of their comfort zones. By placing them in exhausting, unfamiliar, and stressful environments, the program aims to reveal their true reactions under pressure. Matt Johns, a former military commander, notes that the drive possessed by athletes helps them bridge the gap between surviving a mock crisis and leading a team on the pitch.

Despite the intensity, the cohort remains supportive. Ella Masar, a former US international currently pregnant, highlighted the respect and inclusion shown by her peers throughout the ordeal. By the end of the two-day exercise, these coaches are expected to return to their clubs with a clearer understanding of how to manage stress and lead effectively when faced with the unpredictable nature of top-tier football management.
