Miguel Almiron Sets Unwanted Record as First World Cup Player Sent Off for Covering Mouth

Miguel Almiron became the first player in World Cup history to be sent off for covering his mouth during a match, following new FIFA regulations regarding confrontational behavior.

Miguel Almiron has entered the record books as the inaugural player to be dismissed from a World Cup match for shielding his mouth during an argument. This incident follows recent FIFA rule changes for the 2026 tournament across North America, which specify that masking one’s mouth during a confrontation with an opponent can result in an automatic red card.

During a pivotal group stage encounter against Turkey, Paraguay took an early lead through Matias Galarza. However, the game shifted just before the break when Almiron was penalized for covering his mouth while speaking to Turkey’s Mert Mulder. Following an intervention by VAR, the referee dismissed the former Newcastle United midfielder.

While FIFA rules still permit players to cover their mouths when strategizing with teammates, such as during free kicks, the mandate strictly forbids the action during hostile interactions. Paraguay head coach Gustavo Alfaro declined to discuss the officiating directly but expressed frustration regarding the circumstances surrounding his team. Despite playing with a disadvantage for much of the game, Paraguay successfully held their lead to secure a win. This result keeps their hopes alive ahead of their upcoming match against Australia, while Turkey faces elimination after losing their first two games.
