Michael Jackson biopic sets new all-time global box office record

The Michael Jackson biopic has secured its place as the highest-grossing biographical film of all time, outperforming Oppenheimer at the global box office.

The film Michael, a production centered on the life of pop icon Michael Jackson, has officially become the highest-grossing biopic in history. With global ticket sales reaching 977 million dollars, the movie has surpassed the previous record-holder, Christopher Nolan’s 2023 feature, Oppenheimer. By achieving this milestone, the film has also overtaken other major musical biopics like 2018’s Bohemian Rhapsody.

Directed by Antoine Fuqua, the movie follows Jackson’s trajectory from his early days with the Jackson 5 to his transformation into a global solo superstar. Jaafar Jackson, the singer’s nephew, stars in the lead role, supported by actors Colman Domingo and Nia Long. This film now stands as the most successful project for Lionsgate Studios.

Despite the financial success, the movie faced criticism from reviewers who argued that the narrative omitted serious sexual abuse allegations, leading some to describe it as a sanitized portrayal of the artist’s life. Conversely, general audiences have rated the film significantly higher than critics on various platforms. The production features the late singer’s original vocal recordings and received backing from his estate.

The release has triggered a notable surge in the popularity of Jackson’s music. His tracks have climbed streaming charts, and his greatest hits compilation has returned to the top spot on the UK album charts. Industry reports suggest that Lionsgate is already planning future projects related to the late performer’s life story.
