The Metropolitan Police have initiated an inquiry into a financial contribution made to Robert Jenrick’s 2024 Conservative leadership campaign. BBC News reports that the Electoral Commission referred the matter to authorities this January, following concerns that £37,500 of the funds may have originated from overseas, which is prohibited under UK electoral law.
The investigation centers on allegations that a portion of £100,000 donated by the firm Spott Fitness actually stemmed from a US-based company, Innovyz, founded by Gary Klopfenstein. Businessman Phillip Ullmann, who was the source of the Spott Fitness contributions, has not provided comment. Jenrick, who has since defected to Reform UK, maintains that the claims are entirely false and politically motivated. His representatives state that the campaign followed all legal requirements and that Jenrick had no prior knowledge of any connection between the donors and the US entity.
While the Metropolitan Police confirmed the active investigation, they have not identified specific individuals involved. Jenrick noted he has had no direct contact with police regarding this case, asserting that he fully cooperated with the Electoral Commission’s previous review.
