England white-ball head coach Brendon McCullum remains confident that Harry Brook will eventually take on the role of Test captain. Brook, 27, currently captains the white-ball squad and previously served as the Test vice-captain. Following the sudden retirement of Ben Stokes, Joe Root was reinstated to the Test leadership position.
McCullum, who departed his role as Test coach in July, spoke highly of Brook while managing the team’s preparations for next year’s 50-over World Cup. He noted that Brook is performing exceptionally well in his current capacity and expressed eagerness to assist in his continued development as a leader. McCullum emphasized that while Root is the right choice for now, Brook holds a significant future in the red-ball format.
Regarding the wider structure of English cricket, McCullum offered his full endorsement of his successor, Stephen Fleming. Although Marcus Trescothick will manage the upcoming Pakistan series, Fleming is set to take full control by the South African tour this December. McCullum praised Fleming’s expertise and indicated that they maintain a close working relationship to ensure long-term success across all formats of the game.
