Following West Ham United’s relegation from the top flight, Portuguese midfielder Mateus Fernandes has finalized a move to Tottenham Hotspur. The clubs confirmed the transfer on Thursday.
The 21-year-old talent moved to London in 2025 and finalized this switch for a reported club record fee of 85 million pounds, equivalent to 113.4 million dollars. Manager Roberto de Zerbi is looking to reshape his squad after Spurs barely escaped relegation to the Championship last year.
Fernandes cited the club’s scale and the influence of the head coach as deciding factors. He emphasized a shared vision for aggressive, energetic football aimed at winning every match. Having previously played for Sporting Lisbon and Southampton, the midfielder earned his first international cap in April, though he missed out on the World Cup roster under Roberto Martinez.
De Zerbi praised the new signing for his technical skill, tactical awareness, and intensity. The manager noted that Fernandes possesses valuable Premier League experience and the mental toughness required to perform under pressure. De Zerbi expressed enthusiasm about facilitating the player’s ongoing development at the club.
