Serena Williams saw her Wimbledon comeback halted in the first round after a 6-3, 6-7 (6/8), 6-3 loss to Australian player Maya Joint. This marked the 44-year-old tennis legend’s first singles appearance at the tournament in four years. Despite entering the match with significant fanfare, Williams could not overcome her opponent on Centre Court.
The match lasted two hours and 22 minutes, with Williams fighting hard to save two match points before eventually losing in a deciding third set. Williams, who had retired briefly before deciding to return this June to play for her children, had participated in warm-up events at Queen’s Club and Berlin prior to receiving a wild card entry for Wimbledon.
The crowd greeted the seven-time champion with great enthusiasm as she appeared on court with her husband, Alexis Ohanian, and daughters, Olympia and Adira, watching from the stands. Although the 20-year-old Joint was born after Williams had already secured seven Grand Slam titles, she remained unfazed by the atmosphere and the iconic status of her opponent.
Williams is not entirely finished at the tournament, as she is slated to compete in the doubles competition alongside her sister, Venus. While her singles run was brief, she managed to show flashes of her former greatness throughout the contest. This appearance follows her 2022 first-round exit at Wimbledon, and her last previous major tournament effort at the 2022 US Open.
