Maresca explains why Erling Haaland is not his choice for Manchester City captain

Enzo Maresca has explained that Erling Haaland will not serve as Manchester City captain because the role requires a player who can frequently report to the touchline for tactical instructions.

New Manchester City boss Enzo Maresca has clarified why Erling Haaland will not be named the club’s captain. Following the departures of Bernardo Silva to Real Madrid and Rodri to Barcelona, Maresca is tasked with appointing a new leader for the squad.

Although Maresca and the Norwegian striker have maintained a positive relationship since 2023, the manager prefers Ruben Dias for the role. Maresca noted that he requires his captain to frequently approach the bench for tactical updates after scoring goals.

The manager humorously dismissed the idea of Haaland taking on this responsibility during matches, emphasizing that he needs a player who can easily communicate with the coaching staff. During recent games, Dias has already demonstrated this role by frequently checking in with the bench.
